The Wellington MRO Zen group holds Zen Buddhist meditation (zazen) sessions on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings. Our group is open to all those interested in exploring Zen practice as a form of enquiry into who we are, and how to live a life of "great capacity". Newcomers are welcome.
Beginner instruction in Zen meditation is available to newcomers each Monday evening, providing a helpful orientation to the Zen Buddhist tradition, the practice of zazen, and the resources and retreats offered by the Zen Institute of New Zealand.
There is no charge for attending zazen. For those who can afford it, a donation ($5 - $10) to help pay the rent would be much appreciated.
Mountains and Rivers Order Zen groups are open to people of any cultural, ethnic, economic and religious background, gender or sexual orientation.
Along with our weekly schedule of meditation, we participate in monthly Skype-based discussions called "mondo" with the teachers of the Mountains and Rivers Order. These discussions are valuable opportunities to connect with a Zen teacher and clarify the functioning of Zen practice in our everyday lives.
Weekend Zen Meditation Retreats at Strathean
Each autumn and spring, the Wellington MRO group, in conjunction with the Manawatu MRO group, runs an intensive weekend meditation retreat at Strathean, near Otaki on the Kapiti Coast. Led by experienced MRO students, the retreats begin on Friday evening and finish after lunch on Sunday. Newcomers with some experience in meditation are welcome but we ask that, if possible, you join us for a Monday evening meditation first.
Week-Long Zen Meditation Intensives (Sesshin)
The MRO runs week-long silent meditation retreats in the Nelson area each July (led by Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Sensei) and in Canterbury each January (led by a Dharma Holder in the Mountains and Rivers Order). Click here to find out more.

Zen Meditation Times
Monday evenings: 7.00 - 9.00pm
2 x 35 min periods of zazen, 10 mins of kinhin (walking meditation).
First Monday of every month: 35 mins of zazen, 10mins of kinhin, 45 min recorded Dharma talk by Shugen Sensei. (Beginners instruction in zazen available by appointment)
Tuesday mornings: 7.30 - 8.30am
